Seth Bro

Most of Seth's childhood was spent reading & writing, and he still revels in language, be it in the form of blank verse or recursive loops. Raised in St. Louis, he holds dual degrees in English & Political Science from the University of Missouri—Columbia, where he was involved in a perpetual series of community arts projects, including literary magazines ardentia and The Missouri Review, a number of spoken word/slam poetry series, and the now-defunct Garage Art.

When not coding, Seth is most likely found biking around his adopted city of Chicago, gawking at the endless art deco and gradually getting himself involved with a brand new set of people and projects. He has a great cat, a stellar roommate and no fingernails.

Seth Bro - Million Dollar Bash and standards-based web development.

bro

Million Dollar Bash is a collaborative musical project initiated by musician Wes Wingate. The idea, which apparently came to him in an (unnumbered) dream, was to assemble the best and the brightest local musical acts from Columbia, MO and surrounding areas to pay tribute to that most tribute-worthy of songwriters, Bob Dylan. The result, released by Home Tone Productions, is a staggeringly inclusive collection of Dylan covers by artists of all ages and styles, including The Doxies, Hillary Scott, Bockman and many more. The album was recorded at Bridge Studio and released in late 2006.

Early on in the project's conception, I joked to Wes that I could record a version of "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie"—a little-known Dylan poem that appeared on The Bootleg Series, Vol 1. To my surprise, Wes not only agreed but insisted that I do so.

To my knowledge, no other recording of this piece has ever been released, and given that the poem's length made its licensing rather pricey, I am thrilled and thankful that this recording made it to the album. Million Dollar Bash is available through CDBaby, the iTunes store, and MP3-Extension, and numerous other online stores.

Content Management Systems

Too often choosing a web designer means choosing a dependency, with you suddenly reliant on someone else each time a small change comes up.

I build sites that give you power over your content. With a background in publications, I understand how quickly priorities can shift. Nearly all my projects include some sort of content management system (CMS). I'll help you identify what information you need to track, how it relates, and what's most likely to change. Then I'll make sure you can easily update important areas, without having to sweat the small stuff.

For medium to large scale sites, I often recommend Expression Engine—a versatile and feature-rich program. However, I've also built sites using Movable Type, WordPress, home-grown code, and hybrid systems. My goal is to find the solution that's right for you, both now and for the future.

Gelf Magazine

The Gelf editors were comfortable with their established Movable Type setup, but wanted to track more kinds of information and present these in a modular fashion. Interrelationships between categories and articles were also becoming more important.

I began with a thorough review of Gelf's existing system, identifying areas that could be simplified or that might pose problems. I then integrated numerous extensions developed by the Movable Type community with my own scripts. The resulting system intelligently displays articles and categories based on page context while minimizing server overhead and build time. Key images can be associated with articles and featured content changed in an intuitive, flexible way.

When Trident Communications was contracted to re-develop Chemsystems Online—Nexant's multi-million dollar online data analysis resource for the petroleum industry—they brought me out to help determine the information needs and structure of the new site.

After a crash course in the energy field, I outlined the basic information architecture requirements, identifying the relationships between hundreds of materials, products and regions. I also aided in selecting the technologies and visual interface for the new site, including early prototypes of the Flash application that presents data results. In addition, I wrote the base HTML and styles for the current site.

Seth Bro - Homefront and standards-based web development.

Homefront with Don Zeman is a longstanding home improvement radio call-in show that also broadcasts television segments in over 60 markets nationwide, reaching some 1.6 million viewers. They approached me to redevelop the site in 2005, concerned that their web presence wasn't living up to the success they'd found in other media.

The Homefront website is driven by consumer-education pieces for homeowners. News and how-to articles are posted on a semi-daily basis, yet their archive of 1,000+ articles lacked decent browse and search capabilities. They also required new media solutions: the Saturday radio program is streamed live, with audio/video archived in multiple-formats.

Realizing that content management was Homefront's primary issue, I began with an Expression Engine installation, customizing as necessary. Text and media archives were reformatted to be more efficient and search engine friendly, and the entire site was given a more visually engaging layout. Homefront frequently engages in national tours and promotions, so a system was developed to easily feature new sponsors and events on the home page. I emphasized the integration of web tasks with existing office documents and procedures. As a result, the Homefront staff now updates multiple areas of the site independently, though I continue to work with them on new campaigns, and more site developments are planned for 2007.
